The Men

1. Patrick: Bad song choice. It was like Kenny Loggins as a "rocker" (and really, has anyone ever bought Kenny Loggins or Richard Marx as anything but balladeers?). That said, I still voted like hell for him, because I know he can sing ballads, and I want at least one before the competition is over. Just one. So I can drool.

2. David: Aka Crooner Boy. Please go bye bye now. What was with the weasel face when singing? And that song is incredible, and yet he killed it. I couldn't stand him anyway, but ugh!

3. Bucky: Yes, I voted for Bucky. Remember, I owed him for the cowboy hat comments and doubting his singing. But also? His voice intrigues me. It's rough and different. Granted, while the song was a great song (I have a thing for guys in this competition who sing adult songs - you know, they remember they're MEN), he did force it. But he was in tune and wasn't affected, which is a big plus in my book. Not the best singer by a long shot, but considering the bottom group, I'd like to see more.

4. Will: He's the cutest of the young'uns. Too dang adorable for words and he sang an age appropriate song. And he sang it well and had fun. That said, I'm not enamored of any of the "kids" in this enough to forget they're kids. Give him a few more years in high school chorus to see what he wants to do with his life.

5. Chris: I know I'm supposed to love him. Objectively I know he's good. But he's like Katharine for me, there's something that just doesn't click. For one thing, Bon Jovi, while fun...no matter how old they get, they still have that same "young" sound (the sound they had at the beginning of their career - hey, it makes them money, can't argue with that). So that wasn't a man's song for me, and of anybody, I expected him to have a song that reflected his age.

6. Kevin: Pretty voice. But no. That song is too old for him. And he is SO very young. And I feel like this competition isn't good for him because it could beat him down later, big time. (Now, can I adopt his dad? His dad is TOO cute.)

7. Gedeon: Good song choice (my mother was surprised to hear he's 17 - he does seem more mature). Lots of fire and spark. He creeps me the hell out. If that interview beforehand hadn't been included? I would have been so on board. Instead I'm just kind of leery. (And frankly, when I'm watching a song and realize that he reminds me more of Tracy Morgan from SNL than a singer, that's a problem.) One thing, though...I don't doubt that he will try harder than *anyone* in this competition to win. That boy has drive.

8. Sway: Gah. Totally got out of order on this. Okay, so the entire song in falsetto hurt at times because of the sharpness. At other times it was nice. And on that one note? I swore I'd vote for him some just based on that one note. I dare ANY of the women to hit that note. I bow down.

9. Elliott: Maybe not exactly THE best male voice ever, but let me tell you, dang great talent there. Boy ain't pretty, but he's got pipes. I kind of want him and Mandisa to do a duet, now. Can we just turn AI into a "duets" competition? Put them together, let them loose on some Ashford and Simpson, and life would be grand.

10. Ace: Okay, so Ace's voice is a wee bit too boy band for me. But Ace is unusual. He's the most self-aware of any contestant I've ever seen, even more so than Constantine. He knows what he can and can't sing. He knows how to choose a great song. He knows how to sell it. Plus he's prettier than Constantine and has a better voice. He fully knows how to make up for his short-comings. And he, like Bucky and Taylor, knows he's a man.

11. Bobby: Bobby will be going goodbye tonight.

12. Taylor: Levon. Good song. Totally not something that Taylor can sing, though. I was underwhelmed, although I fully know he's moving on to the top 12. I guess I just expect more WOW from him, considering the fact that he's an artist (he is more of an artist than just a singer).

***

Totally voted for: Sway, Bucky, Elliott and Patrick.
Tried to vote for: Chris, Ace, Taylor.
Probably safe anyway: Will, Kevin.
In danger of elimination: Patrick, Sway, maybe Bucky (depending-reviews have been mixed), David, Gedeon.
Definitely gone: Bobby.

This is what happens when a person is mildly bored at lunch and gets the idea to watch NASCAR commercials instead of What Not To Wear repeats.
