A question to the Californians on my f-list: do your earthquakes tend to go "boom"?

Also, to the North Carolinians that are freaking over it, come on! LOL An earthquake that measures 2.6 on the Richter scale? We're not that wussy. Hurricanes are scarier than an earthquake like that.

Note to self: Going home will be SERIOUSLY screwy today. If my calculations are right, the President will be coming back to Greensboro from Randleman around 5. *whimper* Dear Mr. President - way to fuck up my commute home. Couldn't you have gone to see Kyle Petty sooner? Kyle's cool and all, and we adore him muchly, so thanks for going to the camp and checking things out, but still.

Need to ditch all my Jimmie Johnson icons. I don't like him anymore.

Due to the creation (by rearranging of furniture and bringing in my ferns) of a reading nook, I spent way too much time last night curled up reading a book. Like, didn't go to bed when I should have, insisted on finishing the book. Which means I went to bed at 2 am and got four hours of sleep. So yes, I'm on Coke number two.

LOL I sound like a petulant five year old, but man, his being assy over Brian did me in. I just can't even look at him on the screen without flipping him off. I actually like Kyle Busch better!

Wow, that's saying a lot!!

Guess that means no more Kimmie, though. *sniffles*

lol, sometimes. It depends on which kind of earthquake you get. Sometimes there are really violent, shaky ones where you'll get a big jolt at the beginning that makes a kind of booming sound. Then there are the more gentle, rolling ones and you tend not to get a booming sound on those.

Also, to the North Carolinians that are freaking over it, come on! LOL An earthquake that measures 2.6 on the Richter scale? We're not that wussy. Hurricanes are scarier than an earthquake like that.

lmao, you can actually feel a 2.6? lol, I can't even remember the time I felt anything smaller than, like, a 4.0. lol, and I usually sleep through those. And yeah, hurricanes = scary.

Need to ditch all my Jimmie Johnson icons. I don't like him anymore.

lmao, I read that and I was actually kind of sad somehow, which is weird because I can't stand Jimmie and never have been able to, so you think I'd be happy that you're starting to see the light, lol. But it just makes me . . . sad somehow, lol. I think I'm more sad for you, because I think it sucks when you suddenly start not liking a driver you used to like. If that makes sense. lol, it's too early in the morning. :)

According to those folks you can. The only thing I can figure is that the epicenter was fairly close to the surface. They're saying there was a boom that sounded like it was coming from the ground and that floors shook.

Disillusionment with any sports person - it's hard to watch. *nods* That's part of it for me, as well. I don't like that I don't like him. But he was just so petty about Brian and that lack of moral character, I just can't root for it. If he had been apologetic for being an ass in any way, maybe, but he was quite happy in saying in interviews that he wasn't going to take Brian's calls.

The USGS guy on 12 last night said that they were, indeed, very shallow.

We do get a lot of sinkholes around here. I wonder if it was some kind of underground collapse?

From: [identity profile] maveness.livejournal.com

Ah ha. I bet the shallow factor is at play.

I wouldn't be surprised. Although it'll be funny when the news media have to cover disappearing buildings. "OMG! First earthquakes, now this! Is the end nigh? Is Jesus coming? Is the sky falling?"

Huh. lol, that's unusual. Usually what I notice as far as sound goes is the rattling of windows. To me, that's usually the loudest sound, apart from the actual noise of the quake itself (which always kind of sounds a bit like a roar to me). lol, but then, that's just me. :)

And dude . . . I'm sorry about the disillusionment thing. Personally, I could kind of understand his anger, but I still think he acted like a child about it. But yeah, dude, I'm sorry that had to happen like that. :(

The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake felt more like a very, very wavy roller coaster. I was on the overpass at the time and all the lights were swaying back and forth and it felt like all my tires had blown. Didn't hear any booms or sounds ... that was what, 6.9? 2.2 ain't nothing here.

When I got home, all the dressers had fallen down. My sister's fish tank lost all it's water and all the fishes inside. Her computer monitor fell over. Her bookcases tumbled down.

Take care.

I don't think any pictures fell off walls here (none reported anyway). I swear, NCers are tough as nails on some kinds of natural things, but throw us an earthquake and you'd swear the sky was falling.

Granted, I don't think buildings in NC are built to earthquake code, so that might make things a little different, but still.

Freaky! I'd never thought in terms of sound and earthquakes, because you usually hear about the ones that are fairly far underground and big enough to shake things for miles. The little ones close to the surface, though...

On April 30, 2003, there was an earthquake in Georgia. I have no idea what it was on the Richter scale, but I think it was pretty small. It hit very early in the morning and sounded like a very loud sonic boom. My entire house shook, but nothing fell. I thought perhaps the quarry nearby had started work early or a large limb had fallen on my house.

From: [identity profile] maveness.livejournal.com

Hmmm. The booming thing then - I couldn't figure if it was just a case of folks having heard something else that would later turn out to be an earthquake or what. That's freaky! I swear, the booming would be worse than the quaking.

HAHAHA OMG! *cracks up over the Jimmie hate*

His eyelashes are still pretty.

*g* I feel so bereft! It's one less of what used to be one of my boys.

He's very photogenic. For which I can hate him now instead of admiring. *g*
