Because I like [livejournal.com profile] paperbkryter's way of doing it...

Mave on fanfiction music: Sometime when I write I like to have music playing, but sometimes not. But when I do have something playing, it's very often *not* of the same mood as the story I'm writing. If I'm writing chipper or happy or anything upbeat, I still have on mellow, seductive or downright depressing music. Why? Well, upbeat music will have me dancing and not writing. Sitting is impossible when upbeat is on. Instead, to write I need something that helps me focus. And my focus list is as follows:

True North by Fisher
Anything by Chris Isaak
Brand New Day by Sting
Sogno by Andrea Bocceli

With those I can write.

Mave on why I write fanfiction - and when: I've been thinking about this lately, as I've found myself without any incentive to write, and I've come to very easy conclusions about why I write.

I write to fulfill a need, to express an immediate emotion or whatnot, that is missing on screen. Yeah, this isn't new. Many others have said it. But in the case of Smallville, my initial writing was to fulfill a need as far as Chloe and Clark were concerned. Then the show gave me something. And painted themselves into a corner in the process. So now, I really don't have as much to work with, and that results in me really not wanting to write Clark and Chloe. For a while I had Pete hope, so I wrote some Pete. They've pretty much taken that away too. So now, I feel no need to really write (although some futurefic ideas are still lingering for Chloe and for some Clark/Lois drama).

With Firefly, there was the lure of discovering who Jayne was, but I need weekly fodder to keep delving into his psyche. And when the show isn't on, well, that pretty much kills that.

I have a yen to write X-Men, but everyone has done it so far. So I'm just going to wait until the sequel comes out, then wade into the pool then. Safer that way. New fodder. I have a feeling that's when I'll want to write again. For X2. *drools over the W/R possibilities*

Mave on rules of complaining: I now decree that anyone who wants to complain about the economy have to take a course in economics. I am sick and tired of hearing over and over about how this or that politician is completely and without a doubt responsible for all of the economic woes of whatever point in time. Look, there's this thing about the economy. We can't all have stupendously wonderful times. It goes up and it dips. When it goes to extreme highs, it has to go back down a lot too. This is not something new. It's not a Democrat thing or a Republican thing. Yes, politics do play into how it can be managed, but it's a cycle we have to deal with. If you haven't a *clue* what you're talking about, just shut up already.

(This rant is aimed mainly at those people who have written Letters to the Editor and can't seem to find a more rational argument than "It's all Bush's fault" or "the Democrats of the last administration bungled it for all of us." Get over the politics already and look at the big picture. It's called reality.)

The above economic rant is not aimed at anyone in the LiveJournal online community (that I read regularly). It was just something that was festering for awhile. Hell, when I took economics in college, the professor *warned* that a dip was coming. It was obvious.
