Because I'm a sap...

Last night I was flipping through a crappy local magazine. The content isn't bad, but the main problem is how they lay the sucker out. Sadly, it's hard to tell what's an article and what's an ad. (Everything is in bright, bright color.)

Fortunately, I didn't give up the magazine and stumbled across an article about local people who "make it big", as it were. And the first one? Vickers!

(I typed this, so all typos mine. The article isn’t online. Notations following the article correct what the article got wrong or failed to explain.)

Life in the Fast Lane

At 23, Trinity native Brian Vickers is living the dream. The 2003 NASCAR Busch series champion, Vickers has been driving at speeds in the 200 mph range for years…and with his parents’ blessing. Ramona and Clyde Vickers have played a big role in their son’s success. Not only is she his biggest fan, his mother also manages the office at Brian Vickers, LLC.

Brian’s career started with go-kart racing when he was eight and quickly morphed into bigger stuff as he swept through competitions. The racing circuit meant criss-crossing the county when many kids his age were living a more typical teen life. Meanwhile, he has become a household name for racing fans, especially Triad folks who like to root for a hometown boy making it big.

“I love my job. It’s a lot of fun, but I also say that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. I travel all over and don’t see my family as much as I’d like to. There is always something to do or someone who needs me. That being said, I love what I do,” says Vickers.

The job takes him all over the country and gives him the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. Teaming with other Red Bull drivers such as Michael Schumacher for Formula One (a single-seater motorsports division) events has even sent him abroad. Through racing, Brian Vickers has met famous people while becoming one, too. “You meet some that you’ve put way up on a pedestal that let you down, and others that turn out to be really nice,” says Brian Vickers, definitely one of the nice guys.

His favorite tracks? Of course he mentions Daytona, but he also likes Phoenix, Las Vegas and Napa Valley. The blast of adrenaline while flying around a racetrack spurs him on. So does lapping around Victory Lane. “I love to go fast. It never gets old. I played a lot of other sports but never got the same rush,” he says. “I’m just racing to have fun.”

While the schedule is non-stop and he does admit it seems strange to keep his Lexus GS 450H (H as in hybrid. Vickers is a strong environmentalist.) at the speed limit, driving the #83 Red Bull Toyota Camry in the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season is one thrilling way to draw a paycheck. You could ask him yourself, but it’s pretty tough to catch Brian Vickers at his pace of life.

***

1. BV isn’t from Trinity. He’s from Thomasville. But Brian Vickers, LLC is in Trinity.
2. Note the reference to the race track in Napa Valley. Argh. On one hand, that may have been how Brian explained to them where it was (as Sonoma is kind of vague). On the other, that may have been their clarification that sucks.
3. Vickers. Hybrid. Screw all else in life, I want to squish him NOW. (Yep, that clarifies nor corrects anything. But it is important.)
