Steel Magnolias

Well, I auditioned for Steel Magnolias last night. Local play, which usually results in about 15 people coming out. Except it's Steel Magnolias, so 36 women auditioned. And they made us all audition age appropriate! (Considering I'm 29, I really don't see any age appropriate roles, but apparently under 30 means Shelby and Annelle.)

So I didn't get to audition for Truvy. And I knew without a shadow of a doubt that I'm too "big" (personality, voice) for Shelby. My sister, who is not an actress (believe me, it's not like I am either) and who has never auditioned for a play before, she actually did really well. I was surprised and pleased. She didn't get a callback, but she held her own.

They did callbacks, three women for each role. 18 total women.

Clairee is a lock. Carol (the woman who'll play Clairee) is possibly the best actress the county's ever had. She was made for Clairee and can give it the right spark without being overshadowed by Ouiser.

I know of the three women who auditioned who I'd give the role of Ouiser to, but there's not telling which way they'll go. Only one seemed to nail the reading perfectly and have fire (and incidentally, the woman had played Truvy before).

I actually didn't watch two of the Shelby/M'Lynn callbacks. Partially because one of Shelbies overacted like you wouldn't believe. Partially because the other Shelby is a raving bitch who got to audition for Shelby and Annelle in the callbacks (she's on the board, sneered at my sister and I, and is a lock for a role - girl has talent, but she's a raving bitch). I did get back in for the last Shelby/M'Lynn. That Shelby kicked ass and really should get the role. She played well off that M'Lynn as well. They had a nice mother/daughter vibe going. But by skipping the other two, I didn't have a good judge on the M'Lynns. And M'Lynn has to carry the play.

As far as Truvy goes, one woman seemed to stand out in anything she did. I actually preferred her M'Lynn, but she only got a callback for Truvy. Thing is, she had the warmth for Truvy that the other women playing Truvy lacked. I think they'll need her in the role.

This brings us to Annelle, which is what I got a callback for. (And it just hit me - the chick who did a dead-on Darryl Hannah didn't get a callback. Thank god it wasn't just me who didn't appreciate her performance. Everyone else loved it. I found it a good impersonation, not actual acting.) Of course the bitch got to audition. She sucked. Seriously, she didn't even try. You could tell she knew she just had to read lines, because she's in there as something. Another girl auditioned and did well. She had a hard time, because the woman playing Truvy to her Annelle had a broken foot and couldn't get up.

Which leads to me, for this is my journal and all. *g* Auditioned for Annelle, and I'm quite proud of myself. Whether or not I get the part (which is probably not), and whether or not I was the absolute best, I had fun and *acted*. See, I've always auditioned for plays and gotten parts that are the crotchety old women. Since I was 12. Granted, it's easier to get those roles when you're in plays with people your age, but still. I knew Shelby wasn't even a remote chance (although I still squeed when I got to read the "blush and bashful" scene), but Shelby can be an annoying character if not played right. I was more intrigued by Annelle because it's so far out of my comfort zone. I went up there, started in on the part, and had fun. Annelle is kind of shy and withdrawn and twitchy, so I played up those parts (instead of just reading the script like Miss Bitch did). All in all, had a fun time, the director and I were joking around (because he's known my mom for years and I had him for chorus in 4th grade), and I know I rocked it to my best ability.

Didn't get the part in the play. Depending on the review when it's coming out (as to who got the roles), I'll consider seeing it. Unless Miss Bitch got Annelle, in which case I couldn't be paid to go.

Talking to the owner of teh company is like "Who's On First". She can't say anything without talking in circles and never getting to the details.

And work is taking over my brain lately, due to recent changes in staffing and job assignments. While I'm all for exciting new things, if only they'd just be a bit less "right now" about them all. Don't expect me to be able to institute something in five minutes!

No frickin way.

Like, seriously, there is NO FRICKIN WAY I GET THIS LUCK.

NASCAR - AGAIN

Um, I just received word that I'm the backup (not first in line, but second) to get tickets and pit passes to Richmond. *boggles* My sister, having guilted the hell out of me over Bristol (and there's the fact that she really wants to go to Richmond anyway, before I found out this stuff), of course would get to go with (Eliz, if Boo was older I'd be dragging you with me on this one *g* - maybe I'll get this lucky next season). We had to turn in names and driver's license numbers because of the pit access issues.

Say it with me now...WHAT THE HELL.

*looks around for the reality check waiting to kick my ass*

We'll know by 5 whether or not it's a go. Frankly, I seriously doubt it. There's no way it will happen. I just got Bristol. My luck is nigh on nonexistent, so I'm tapped out.
