I promise, I'll actually get back to working in a moment.

Women in Racing
I've come to realize that I couldn't have been a racing fan until recently. I started watching in 2001, and it's this crop of drivers that I bond with. I probably couldn't have watched any of the older guard (Richard Petty's generation or earlier) because of one thing...
Attitudes about women in racing.
There are still a few in racing right now who think women can't run with men. Luckily, at least among the drivers, this has become a major minority.
Carl Edwards
Bess from Marianna, Florida: Carl, I enjoy watching you drive. You are a wonderful asset to NASCAR. My question is, are you ready to go door to door with a woman driver on the track?
Carl Edwards: I'll compete with whomever is on the track with me. I don't care. I just want to win races and championships.
Carl's response is similar to several other young drivers. They don't give a flying flip who they run against. Women are just as capable as men. Some may go more in depth, that a woman won't be running in the big leagues (on a competitive, for the title kind of way) for a while, because there isn't a woman in the pipeline at the moment with the experience (Erin Crocker being about the closest, and Erin herself has said she's a couple of years from feeling she's ready to try Cup).
Compare that to statements made this May by Richard Petty (and Mario Andretti): "I just don't think it's a sport for women," Petty said. "And so far, it's proved out. It's really not. It's good for them to come in. It gives us a lot of publicity, it gives them publicity. But as far as being a real true racer, making a living out of it, it's kind of tough."
See why Kyle Petty is loved but Richard has a strong hate base? And he's not alone. But that old guard, they're gone now. The newer drivers either have sisters that may have raced, spouses that did some racing, or competed with women. Heck, many just honestly respect women and don't get the "a woman's place" attitude.
And that's my two cents.
