American Idol: The Women
1. Katharine - Well, that was boring. Pretty singing, but boring. I know I'm supposed to like her, but she gets more and more...torchy. Like, hi, I'm in a small lounge, and I want you to feel all of the emotions of the song, so I'll make exaggerated facial expressions and "emote" like hell. Please, Katharine, stop choosing ballads for a couple of weeks. (The problem here comes down to the Nadia factor. Nadia got off on choosing "different" songs. It was her little way of lording it over everyone that she wouldn't win, but it would be because she was too fringe. Never mind that her not winning had nothing to do with her being fringe and everything to do with her not being as good and having a tendency to sabotage herself. Katharine chooses songs that make sense in terms of singing competitions, but ones aimed at older women, not for a pop competition to be voted on by the American public. I sense too much of her mother's hand in the song choices.)
2. Kinnik - Eh. I appreciate the attempt at different, but she wasn't hitting the notes squarely. It's also a discordant song, so it just managed to make her sound really off when at times she was only a little off. Fun song, but not necessarily a competitive song.
3. Lisa - Ugh. Talk about sucky song choice. And she didn't sing it quite so well. What is it with the judges and Lisa? I keep hearing bad notes, but they just don't call her on it so much.
4. Melissa - While she's not the best vocalist, she was the only one that truly nailed the right song. It worked for her in personality and style, and it showed off her voice to its finest. She's limited and I don't doubt if she makes top 12 that she'll be one of the first gone, but it's nice to see someone find their niche and nail it. Yep, totally voted for her, because she deserved it.
5. Heather - Heather, on the other hand, is so gone. That blew chunks. She hit the notes, but it was totaly underwhelming and lackluster. She's kind of harsh and has a history now of choosing bad songs, and then to top it all off, she went past "American Idol stalker" with a laugh and nudge to "Dang creepy". She seems to be missing some basic fundamental understanding of how to garner votes.
6. Brenna - I don't like her, and I continually find reasons not to like her, but this was just bad. Plus, Last Dance? Has no one informed her that to choose songs that indicate they're leaving means...they usually end up leaving? I predict she's gone. Especially after the weird eye thing she had going. Whereas Melissa always has dead eyes, at least she compensated in every other way. Brenna had a lackluster performance and then her eyes...not only were they dead, it was like she was not quite glaring at the camera. It wasn't a glare, but there was a lack of spark that came off hostile. It was weird. I honestly have to say I've never seen that look before while someone smiles and dances.
7. Paris - I liked what she sang. See, Bette is a staple. That song is a staple. It's like someone singing "Candle in the Wind" - it's just...a staple! Now, would I have trashed the belt and kept her hair down? Yes. All around, though, I enjoyed it, even with the oversinging.
8. Ayla - Technically darn good. She's coming into her own and really getting her hands around the criticisms. I like her work ethic. She doesn't wow me, but she's the kind of person that you want as an example for future contestants on how to compete. If Brenna would channel her energies into her singing the way Ayla does, I think Brenna could be a formiddable opponent.
9. Kellie - Um, I like Kellie's personality. Her singing is eh, but her personality - it's so very much like family! As a coworker put it this morning, she's unapologetically country, like Dolly Parton. They let their country roots show proudly. Now, I also realize that Dolly Parton is dang smart and made a conscious decision long ago to be herself, larger than life personality and all, whereas Kellie is probably just sweet, harmless, and kind of...dim. But the difference for me in liking Kellie comes down to this - if there are going to be so so singers in the competition, at least let them be entertaining in other ways.
10. Mandisa - That song was too puny for her. Which is a bizarre thing to say, but while it makes skinny Faith Hill sound like she's really singing big, it strangled Mandisa a little. Her voice is too big for that song. I still love her, though. Still my favorite.
