You know, slow days during the summer with nothing much going on fandom-wise leads to reading things you normally wouldn't.
So I have a question, just in general, about the newest Harry Potter book (in light of the fun that is Fandom_Wank).
All the folks going batshit insane (with rampant misspellings and threats and hysterical ramblings and really, the over-the-top craziness)...doesn't it all come down to the fact that this is JKR's story and we're along for the ride? Everything's open for interpretation, but ultimately it's what comes about as canon, what the writer writes.
Dudes, I get irritated by AlMiles and their rampant Lana love, but I know I have the cushion of "Lois gets him in the end". That's because they're creating canon (Clark Kent's teenage years) within a canonical framework that they can only play with so much.
On a more comparable note, when I was a kid and reading Nancy Drew mysteries I was continually annoyed by Ned Nickerson. He was a tool and totally unworthy. And, okay, I wanted Nancy to hook up with Frank Hardy. *eg* But did I cry and wail because it didn't (although it was hinted at being a potential in the early Double Mysteries)? Nope. Wasn't my story to tell.
And that's why there is fanfic. Whee! Wherein we change what we want, work things around the way we want, and generally rewrite canon as we see fit. Some stick close to canon, some go far and wide. It's all good.
