I am liberal when it comes to criminal justice, but I've made no bones about the fact that I am a criminal justice major and going into law enforcement.

Free speech is allowed when it does not infringe on the rights of others. That's why people can say anything they want to say. That's why people can burn flags. That's why people can stage protests and march and demonstrate and shout from the rooftops their opinion. Because they have the right.

Personal freedom is guaranteed in the Constitution, and everyone knows the Bill of Rights (for the most part). Freedom of speech and freedom of assembly are guaranteed.

But they are NOT guaranteed when one person's rights takes away another's.

FindLaw.com is a great resource on the net for legal information. They give the case history that establishes precedent for the Constitution and all of the Amendments. The Supreme Court has the final say until such time as there is a challenge that they find suitable to change the interpretation of the law.

Speech Plus--The Constitutional Law of Leafleting, Picketing, and Demonstrating

There is a vast amount of information in that one section alone about demonstrating. But by far one section speaks the most to the Supreme Court's rulings on demonstrating in public (and the one that sets the rules that the police abide by, as well as demonstrators).

Speech in public forums is subject to time, place, and manner regulations, which take into account such matters as control of traffic in the streets, the scheduling of two meetings or demonstrations at the same time and place, the preventing of blockages of building entrances, and the like.

Control of traffic is to provide ample opportunity to alert the public to a change in traffic patterns. Control of traffic is to prevent possible injury from wreckless drivers. Control of traffic provides a street for the demonstrators as is their right without inconveniencing the rights of those that may live *on* the street or in the area surrounding.

The Supreme Court makes ruling to the benefit of all, not just a few. There is a fine balance. But laws aren't made to please everyone in every instance. They're made to ensure the most balanced living conditions.

Want to see how my Labor Day will be spent?

Hurricane Frances' projected path

Look at North Carolina. Put your finger on the dead middle of the state (and for those currently questioning what the "dead middle" is...the centermost point). There be me. See the Sunday AM line? Yeah. No matter which way Frances goes, I'm screwed. Same with South Carolina. Florida? I hope we can take a bit of this one for you, because Frances, she be a bitch.

Stop...fannish time. *does Hammer dance*

*cough*

Last Comic Standing was back last night, and I have to say...it's too soon. I'm all LCSed out. But I watched and was reminded that yes, I love Alonzo. His Olympic humor got me laughing the most, because it was timely and original. But Dave Mordal *also* made me laugh hard (until his last joke, which was abysmal).

Was I the only person wanting a head to head of Gary and Tess? *G* Seriously, I wanted chick to take him *on*.

Ralphie almost had me crying. I don't know why he chose to do it. In light of the fact that Bonnie had dropped out (who didn't see that coming), why didn't the folks at the show beg him to take the time and be with his family? Although he was the runner up who should have won so...I know they wanted him on for power for the season one team. Dave and Rich and Tess are the power, just like Alonzo, John and Gary are the power for *their* team. Poor Ralphie.
