[Poll #230244]

(In case anyone's wondering, my personal vote is for the first option.)
Vacation Moment #82: In which Heather's bad hearing and Aunt Elaine's dad's French-Canadian accent collide.

I forgot this one. How I forgot it, I don't know, but lord, it was so of the funny that I have to bring it up now.

My Aunt Elaine's dad is French-Canadian. Lived in the US for years and years. Speaks English beautifully. Still has a slight accent though.

Combine this accent with my hearing, and issues arise.

Shortly before Aunt Lois and her tactless remarks, one of Elaine's sisters brought in a pie, creme de menthe (sp?). Everbody was cutting a piece, so I waited until last. So I'm standing there at the table, people all around talking, cutting a piece of pie, and Elaine's dad looks at me and says "So, do you like men?"

I died laughing. Seriously, what do you do in that situation? You die laughing (or are offended, but seeing as this wasn't the first time in my life I've been asked that - the other time was by a new hairdresser at the salon, and given the salon atmosphere and profession, it wasn't an unusual question - I wasn't offended).

I answered in a complete sentence, which quickly cleared up the confusion over my laughter.

"Yes, I like men."

They all died laughing. For what Elaine's dad really said was "So, do you like mint?"

Damn that "t".
