[livejournal.com profile] misswindy mentioned the other day that some of the songs from Clay's upcoming CD were out and about, and a local station played one this morning. (Hey, we're NC, you know we're going to be on top of the Clay stuff.)

I think I know what part of the problem is with the songs. (Or at least the portion of the one that I heard.)

That doesn't *sound* exactly like Clay.

What was the main complaint that Simon had about Clay? That he was too Broadway. But that sound, that richness in his voice, is what people loved about him. Well, part of what people loved. I myself liked his tone. His song selection wasn't great some of the time, but then I have issues when singers sing songs (three times fast!) that don't sound like them. Example? Jewel and her Intuition song. That isn't Jewel. Doesn't even work with her voice. But for Clay, even when I wasn't crazy about the song, he sounded great (okay, with the exception of Vincent, but everyone pretty much admits that one was bad all the way around).

His sound on this new song isn't classic Clay. His voice is poppier now? Except it reminds me of Survivor, REO Speedwagon, Journey. The 80s psuedo-"rockin" bands.

I'm almost curious if Randy Jackson is playing on the CD.

Granted, it could just be the song that was chosen to play this morning. Maybe that one song is Clay being all poppy. But honestly? Changing the sound on someone whose sound was already very unique, into something less unique, is a stupid move. Clay has a beautiful voice. He gained fans with that voice. Don't screw with it.

And Clay, if you chose to do that, wrong move. If you didn't and were coaxed into changing your sound, please pull a Kelly Clarkson and get picky about your songs.
