Went shopping last night to buy a gift for the Salvation Army Angel that my group at work has. 3-6 month old baby boy that we're buying for. So I went shopping, and I got the cutest pair of denim bib overalls for him. I have this thing for bib overalls. They're so cute on little babies. Plus a cute Christmas outfit for him.
But while I was shopping, I decided to treat myself. I haven't bought a CD in a very, very long time. Heck, I haven't bought a book in a very long time. So I went and bought New Favorite by Alison Krauss + Union Station.
Now, if you own the Oh Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack or like some of the music from that movie, I recommend you go buy New Favorite. Dan Tymenski sings lead on several songs. And it's all fabulous.
But the reason I really recommend this CD is based on two songs, "Let Me Touch You For Awhile" and "The Lucky One." If you read my Elvis entry from the other day, you know I like the sound of song more than anything, but if a song sounds great and has outstanding lyrics, well, I just go nuts for it.
And those two songs have some wonderful lyrics.
Sampling from "The Lucky One":
You're the lucky one, always having fun,
A jack of all trades, a master of none.
You look at the world with a smiling eye,
And laugh at the Devil as his train rolls by.
Give you a song and a one night stand,
You'll be looking at a happy man,
'Cos you're the lucky one.
Well You're blessed, I guess,
By never knowing which road You're choosin',
To you, the next best thing,
To playin' and winnin' is playin' and losin'.
Sampling from "Let Me Touch You For Awhile":
I'm gonna ruin my black mascara.
You're drinkin whiskey when it should be wine.
You keep a-lookin' into that mirror.
But to me you're lookin' really fine.
I don't really know you,
But I'd be willin' to show you,
I know a way to make you,
Laugh at that cowgirl as she's walkin' out your door.
I know a way to make you smile.
Couple those lyrics with a haunting melody, a lilting voice and what you get is magic. Man. I love when artists absolutely nail songs so perfectly in every aspect.
