I know it's only been a few days, but I've missed the companionship of having an animal. I don't want to go home after work because it's lonely.

With my work schedule like it is, though, I can't have dogs. It's not feasible. Or fair to them. Cats would be far better, because of their independence and the not needing to be walked thing. Plus, I'd want two, and my apartment could handle two because two would be about the same size as Chester was.

But you know, not right now. Because I need time, right? Right?

And then I went and looked on Craigslist (just browsing, I swear!) and saw these guys.

I have wondered what I would do if anything happened to my cat, seeing as I volunteer at a cat shelter and know many many cats that need a good home. I often ask myself if I could put aside my grief in order to help another animal.

Being the compassionate animal lover you are I understand how very hard it must be to see those cats and not want to give them a wonderful loving home. In the end only you can judge when you are ready to have another companion.

That would be seriously hard. I think why I'm thinking cats is because I know I'd make a knee jerk reaction and get a dog that wasn't appropriate for my lifestyle, while cats are better suited and I can be more patient with picking. I wasn't expecting to run across anything that worked for me yet, but these are pretty dang perfect - indoor cats, already used to one another, owner doesn't want to split them up, litter box trained, not itty bitty kittens.

And I'm totally going to meet with the girl next Wed or Thursday to see if it's a match with me. *headdesk*

I agree that cats would be a much better match for you, as you work such long shifts. And getting two that are already bonded and could play with each other is even better. Keep us posted!

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWw

I'm not encouraging you, no not gonna do it, nope, they're not absolutely adorable or cute or anything--

IT'S SOOKIE!!!! And Finn from Glee! OH THEY ARE TOO CUTE!

LOL All cats are adorable (well, at least until you pet them, then some lose their shine). These seem to have all the factors I'm looking for, which is why I'm seriously considering it.

They're so cute!

The reasons you're describing are exactly why I opted to get a cat this time around, instead of another dog. I loved Whitley so much, and I would love to have another Westie at some point down the road, but realistically I know that at some point in the next year, I'll end up back in an apartment, and I've done that once with a dog, and it's just hard. Hard on me, and not fair to the dog.

I think at first I felt (subconsciously, at least) guilty for getting another pet so quickly. Somewhere in the back of my mind, it felt like I was saying Whitey was easily replaceable. And after several weeks and a lot of thinking, I've come to realize that's not the case at all.

If you think you're ready, you're ready. If you sorta-kinda think you're ready, you're probably ready.

It's not replacing, it's saying "My animal was so awesome that i hurt without the companionship, so I went looking quickly for something to provide just a measure of what my animal provided before."

That is exactly what it is! :)

And it's not a bad thing at all.

You know, it was almost a year ago today that I was convinced I wasn't ready and that Freyja would never be ready, and then somebody at the animal rescue put this purring tabby who turned out to be named Mikey Bob in my arms...

I still wasn't sure when I actually took him home with me a few days later, but it seems to have worked out.

If they turn out to be the right cats for you, the fact that they already get along so well with each other is a definite plus.

I know it's very soon, but getting two cats is a great idea. Nothing heals quite like the love of another animal. (((HUGS)))
