So, something I was thinking about. Some of the American Idol themes have become tired (either because the contestants refuse to choose anything but the most obvious songs, or because they've been used up and overplayed). Quite honestly, we could stand to see something different. New themes that aren't just cutesy ways to let them choose anything or themes based on one artist.

Past Themes

Here's how it breaks down for 8 seasons:

Era Themes

1950s - 1
1960s - 4
1970s - 3
1980s - 2
1990s - 2
2000+ - 2

Musical Style

Country Rock - 1 (even though no one ever figured out what this one was)
Big Band - 2
Soul - 1
Showtunes - 2
Country - 5
Latin - 1
Classics - 1
British Invasion - 1
Disco - 3
Motown - 4

Vague Themes

Inspirational Songs - 2
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - 1
Movie Themes - 3
Love Songs - 2

Artist Themes

Diane Warren
Billy Joel
Gloria Estefan
Barry Manilow
Elton John
Elvis
Queen
Stevie Wonder
Barry Gibb/Bee Gees - 2
Bon Jovi
Diana Ross
Michael Jackson
Neil Diamond
Andrew Lloyd Webber
Mariah
Dolly Parton
Beatles - 2

Themes That Justify Getting To Sing Anything

Year You Were Born - 4
iTunes/Billboard - 5
No Doubt and the songs that inspired Gwen Stefani - 1

I admit to liking it when they include a night of something current, to see how they compare, but only when it's logical. That No Doubt night did not work as a theme.

Themes To Kill

Quite honestly, if it's been done four times or more, kill it. Make it take a hiatus for awhile. (Motown actually took a major hiatus and they only brought it back this year after the first three years, I believe. But they've hit four.)

That means the following themes would be defunct for, like, two years at least, or three:

1. Year you were born
2. iTunes/Billboard
3. Motown
4. Country (OMG, make them stop, because they all choose the exact same songs year after year)
5. 1960s

I'd go so far as to add the Beatles theme (since they killed that one dead last season with two weeks of hell) and Barry Gibb/the Bee Gees (because the contestants have trouble remembering there's anyone but him/them and Donna Summer on disco night anyway).

Themes to Add

Thinking on themes that should be added, besides throwing in a couple of artist themes per year (they should really be limited on that front, plus require the artist to have had a certain amount of number ones, or success in some measurable form like Andrew Lloyd Webber), I'd have to say that I've got some ideas I like. Random, possibly weird, but themes that would challenge the musicians and add some spark back to the show.

1. New Wave (it would so rule!)
2. Classic Rock
3. Blues
4. Pop (if someone can figure out how to truly define pop)

I'd also argue for bringing back a few themes that ruled and went over well with the audience. Plus, with the way the contestants have figured out "rearranging the song", they'd be different from how initially presented.

1. Big Band
2. Soul
3. 1950s

  • 22:25 @claireliz81 The year Biffle came in second in the standings. But it's not on YouTube, sadly. I've looked a lot. #
  • 20:22 @rivensky Which one? So I can yell "creeper!" at the TV next time he's on. #
