Last night my family spent most of the evening scouring my sister's neighborhood for her dog. Maddie (who is a very large white boxer) disappeared sometime yesterday. The neighbors don't remember seeing her all day.
Large white boxers might be considered unique and possibly expensive by some (they're not - Maddie cost $150 and her properly marked tan and white siblings all went for $1,000 each), or possibly could be mistaken for a pit bull mix, so we were worried that she'd been stolen (especially since a neighbor had her pug stolen). Called the cops, filed a report. K. did flyers and posted them about. We made suggestions and then went home (of course the local animal shelter closes at 4 and stays closed all weekend).
One of the suggestions was to call all the local vets this morning. The first one they called had a stray white female boxer that had been brought in around 2:30 Friday afternoon.
Poor Maddie hadn't gone far from home (the invisible fence apparently got hit by lightening), but she got hit by a car. She has an 18-inch cut on her side that allowed air to get into her lungs, her right femur is broken, and her left ankle requires major surgery. They're looking at $2,500 worth of surgery, and there's no guarantee that Maddie will make it through. (She's a year old and very healthy though. She stands a much better chance.)
My sister cried so much she got sick.
Credit cards have been maxed out (my sister and BIL's), and dad is chipping in some. I feel bad for them. That's their baby.
Hopefully Maddie will pull through and they'll feel it was worth it, though.
