Why am I an animal magnet? Or great at jinxing myself?
Yesterday at work it was *really* boring. I kept begging coworkers to run home at lunch and bring in a dog for me to play with. (The head honcho was out...perfect dog day.)
What happened when I got home last night? The stray that's been at our complex for 3 days was roaming about and howling. It's a pretty dog and very pitiful. Skinny. Needs food. I can see the poor thing's ribs. It also now has a hurt paw. It's a large dog, about 50 pounds I'd say. And it's very timid. For three days I've been trying, and last night I got within a foot of it.
The trick with this dog is food. It's so hungry that it overcomes his fear just to get close to the food. I was so excited last night, as I was shivering and sitting on the ground, talking to it and coaxing it with food, because it got so close.
Of course he sat down at one point and just looked at me, looked at the food...and heaved this great big sigh and looked like he was about to cry. The poor thing is just so *tired*. You can tell he's been in a bad situation if he doesn't trust people, even though he just wants to be taken care of.
There I was, just a foot away and possibly going to coax it to me, and what happens?
The resident stray tabby (didn't know we had one until last night) comes running up and chases the 50 pound dog off! And guess what? The tabby is wounded too. *sigh* So I'm trying to coax a dog, trying to tend to the cat (who thinks the dog food is just nifty keen), the cat's chasing the dog, the dog is afraid of everything. Dang it! I don't need *this* many animals!
Plus, Chester (see my icon) isn't crazy about cats, and he tends to bully timid dogs. So poor stray puppy wouldn't like being around Chester, and Chester and the cat would fight.
