My movie viewing saga continues. Last night I returned my five movies to the video store. My goal was to then rent only one movie: Days of Thunder. Here's my reasoning. 1) NASCAR is on TNT this weekend, meaning I of the no cable cannot see it. 2) Days of Thunder is about NASCAR. 3) In the grand scheme of seeing movies I've never seen before...DOT fits the bill. Never seen it.
But I got thrifty. *sigh* Why pay $2.50 to rent a movie when you can get five for $5? Since the first grouping (of last week) was heavy on the comedy, with horror added in for good measure, I decided that this time would be some action, some horror, and one thriller.
Just remember, this is categorizing by way of my video store.
So last night I watched DOT (I find that really funny as an acronym because of the car aspect.) After picking myself up off the floor from laughing my ass off, I got to wondering, because I'll admit that I came into NASCAR only recently. But, upon asking a coworker, I was reassured that all that beating and banging would *not* have been allowed by NASCAR. And the garage wouldn't have been a barn. And no team owner would ditch their flagship driver in the middle of a season *eye roll*.
I will admit to really liking Robert Duvall's character though.
And the shocker of the night while watching it? Tom Cruise in that movie shares a passing resemblance with...no, not Jeff Gordon. With Jamie McMurray. I was shocked too.
***
I also watched Unfaithful, the thriller of the category. Let me just say this. I don't like Richard Gere. Never have. He's wooden. He's not sexy. He does nothing for me. The wooden thing is a common criticism. A lot of critics also try and claim that his most animated roles are the showboaty ones, like Chicago or Pretty Woman.
Diane Lane is a beautiful and talented woman. That was an incredible role, and she did amazingly challenging things with the sex scenes. I've seen her do touching roles, heartfelt, moving, captivating.
Folks, I don't care if Diane Lane got the Oscar nomination for this movie. Richard Gere stole the show.
He was so subtle and vivid and *real*. He made me cry. As astounding as the sex scenes were, the rest of the role for Diana was...one note. Her one note is richer than others, but she didn't make me feel for the character and the dilemma she found herself in. I actually despised her by the end of the movie. Cheating bitch.
But Richard Gere made me feel for his character so deeply. I was truly astounded and moved. I cried. Over a character that committed murder (albeit second degree murder which would probably get argued as first in court). The murderer touched me far deeper than the adulteress.
