Tomorrow at this time I will be in the midst of flying away on a wing and a prayer. All in pursuit of meeting up with fellow fen to discuss the greatest american hero...Superman.

*g*

You know you love what I just did.

***

Yo, [livejournal.com profile] chiri_chan, I'll meet up with you in baggage claim (I'm pretty darn sure). I'm pretty sure I can't get back up to your gate once I've gotten my bags. But I'll be waiting at the American baggage claim area.

***

Since I'm going to be getting up at 4 am tomorrow to take off for L.A., it was only fitting that last night I was not able to 1) dye my hair, 2) wash dishes, 3) vacuum, 4) clean the bathroom, 5) get to bed early.

Working late killed 1-4. Number 5 was killed by AFI (damn you movie people and your little lists too!). Plus that whole thing where, when I closed my eyes, I kept thinking about all the people at L3Con.

So tonight my agenda for at home will be 1) dye the hair, 2) wash dishes, 3) shave legs, 4) deep condition hair, 5) cuddle dog, 6) get to bed by 9.

And of course tomorrow morning it's get up reaaaaaaaaally early, get ready, pack up the last of the toilitries.
I would like to point out that the first time I ever heard that was from Nancy Drew, not Fox Mulder. Thank you Carolyn Keene.

I have a warning right now for [livejournal.com profile] sullivanlane and [livejournal.com profile] chiri_chan. [livejournal.com profile] ultimatemother had her problem yesterday with the landlady cashing her rent for July early. Me...today the ATM ate my debit card as I was making a deposit and getting ready to withdraw some cash for the trip.

I ended up going to the bank (after calling the ATM operators who shut down the machine) and withdrawing almost all of the cash from my checking account. Better safe than sorry. Plus, without my card, I can only pay by cash for anything in CA. Checks wouldn't be accepted.

So...be wary of weird banking things. Half of our room has already been hit.

Re: the whole fanfic_hate thing...you know, the whole BNF argument is a rehash, but there's one difference from early fandom. Back then there was a popularity issue that didn't always have to do with quality. I may have liked several of the BNFs of the day back then, but honestly? Some of them weren't the greatest writers and were treated like they were fabulous.

The difference today with the "list" of BNFs someone put up for current Smallville fandom is that this group is far more prone to thoughtful, logical, constructive discussion. Do we all always agree? No. Are all of them on my friends' list? No. Do I read everything they write? Heck no. I don't have *time* to read everything everyone on my friends' list writes. I pick and choose based on mood.

Anyway, one thing I oddly enough understand about fanfic_hate, even though I don't necessarily condone it, is the posting anonymously. Yeah, I say have the balls to stand behind your statements. But also, some of the people that had their fic bashed did (back in the day) run folks out of fandom with militant behavior for daring to offer constructive criticism.

BNFs come in two groups: those created by a fandom and those who traverse fandoms based on whimsy. My experience, or at least the observations I've seen so far, have been that those created by the fandom tend to be far more dedicated, far more fun, far more all-expansive in what they discuss. They're the good BNFs. The ones that float from fandom to fandom wielding an iron fist of "this is the only thing that can be good", well, those are the bad BNFs. But their minions also usually follow them out, so no biggie on that one. Not all the floaters who are BNFs are bad. And not all those created by the fandom are good. But for the most part, observation says that there can be good with the bad, and the good can supplant the bad.

And of course I'm being all logical about this right now because nobody has dared be bitchy about Craig being the biggest BNF of them all (because he so is) in Smallville fandom. Which is true. But he's the best BNF in Smallville fandom, and the first, and bitch, it will be on if anyone tries to go after him. *g*

(Be careful of sweet southern girls. We are dangerous.)

Another thing of note whilst perusing the fanfic_hate thing...some of the criticisms were valid. And logical. Tone of voice is everything though, and saying something in a bitchy manner does nothing but anger others. I've done it before when I could have stated something nicer. Of course it also helps to actually give people feedback and refusing to cowtow to perceived BNF status, but that's easier said than done sometimes, or at least feels hard to do. But who knows, you may send feedback on why you didn't like something, and they might be interested and want to discuss! *gasp*

I blame [livejournal.com profile] paperbkryter. We have a beautifully symbiotic fanfic relationship in which we discuss fic and work through plot issues and actually feel comfortable saying something does or doesn't work. Although mainly I do that with her, because I've been lazy about writing anything. *snerk* But having a comfortable form of discussion and feedback is fun (and comes through conversing and getting to know someone over time).

Where was I? I don't know. I'm rambling now.

As a nice diversion from all that, here's a link for all those displaced Southerners looking for a taste of home.

Cheerwine

You can order Cheerwine to be delivered to you. *G* For those not from the South, this stuff is *good*. I got [livejournal.com profile] plum_evil hooked on it while she was here. I was going to take some to L3Con, but currently my suitcases aren't being agreeable.

Just in case there was any doubt or confusion...

I am the preeminent Pimpin' Pete Ross BNF.

And don't forget it.

*preens*

If people are going to go around and call people BNFs, the least they can do is recognize me for my BNF contributions to the fandom. *haughty sniff* Without me, who would there be on the show to shill the WB's products? Huh? Did you ever think of that? Did you think about next season and the quandry the WB will be in? Who will pimp the latest product? Not Pete, for he has escaped their evil clutches.

Okay folks, this LJ will be dead in the water until Monday. *snort* Like you all care.

But I'm off for L3Con! Whippee!
