So I mentioned the part yesterday where I wrote a letter to the editor and it was getting published. For reference, here's the article I wrote in response to.
A racing fan's version of 'Here's your sign'
And this would be my response.
No humor round in Rob Daniel's column
By the way, I didn't title it. That honor goes to the News & Record.
Regarding Rob Daniels' column (A racing fan's version of 'Here's your sign', Tuesday), I can't believe I'm writing in about a sports editorial ("editorial" was supposed to be in quotes, but they took them out - bastards), but I have to speak for racing fans everywhere (and especially the rabid Junior fans in North Carolina) when I say, jokes are only funny when there's an element of truth to them. Implying (OK, outright stating) that the only way Junior could have won that, or any other race, is through fixing, well, that's just absurd.
If it was meant to be funny, it fell flat, and I polled my entire office. I wouldn't say that Jeff Gordon or Ryan Newman would have a race rigged for them to win just to boost ratings, and that's considering I can't stand them. THey have skills, even though I'd prefer they dropped off the face of the earth (or at least the face of NASCAR).
So a little common sense when writing something funny: Make sure your audience will find it funny too.
And don't pick on Junior in North Carolina. That's just suicide.
