I almost died Saturday. It was a conspiracy. Apparently The WB, John Fox/the Panthers, and Michelle Kwan were all conspiring against me.
First there were the Delete Spoilers. Believe me when I say, every conversation that could be had on the ep description? I had with myself Saturday night.
Then there was the Panthers/Rams game. 2 overtimes! The Panthers won, then lost, then won, then lost, then...heart attack. I had heart failure so many times. The hysterical screaming, rocking back and forth in the middle of the floor, pulling on the dog's tail (sorry Chester)...let me just say, I was a mess. Guys, next week? Let's make it all very decisive and show those Eagles who's boss. No overtimes (whether it be win or loss). I have hope, but I know it's not up to me, it's up to you guys. Love ya, but either clinch the thing or don't...none of this giving the game away at the last minute.
And lastly was the US Figure Skating Championships. Here are the facts about figure skating...years ago I would have cared. Then this little 13 year old girl came in second at nationals. Her name? Michelle Kwan. Little, powerful, cute as a button. I was hooked. In the midst of the whole Kerrigan/Harding fiasco it was forgotten about the kid who competed and came in second (but because Kerrigan was rightly so given the berth to the Olympics, Kwan was delegated to alternate position). Before Michelle, ice skating was all about the jumps. Kwan introduced an incredible artistry that changed the sport. I'm whole-heartedly with the idea that dance is a sport, but I've always held the idea that it's also incredibly hard to judge because of the interpretive aspect. With ballroom, it is segmented and elements are expected, and the judges are highly specialized. I think figure skating has almost reached that stage though. Because of Michelle (and now Sasha Cowen - sp?), figure skating's dance element has been altered and brought to a new level. I just don't see how some of them even compare on an artistic level (I still have major issues with the whole Lipinski gold medal thing, but I've learned to let it go...slightly). So Saturday night, watching Sasha fall, then Michelle come out and skate with control and abandon (I know, hard to figure out how she did both) and just take control of the ice...it was magnificent. I was crying along with her at the end. I just can't get as into the sport as I used to, because to me, no one compares (Sasha is close, but as long as Michelle competes, I'll root for her). I appreciate the Rudy Galindo moments, where someone skates that one program of a lifetime that's magical, perfect, and transcendant, but I don't watch every event to see it. I'm happy just watching Michelle.
