Today we have something of an entertaiment wrap-up. Included are foreign movies, girl singers, and girl crushes.

Movies

I'm completely mystified by the needs of movie reviewers to compare movies that are nothing alike. I watched Monsoon Wedding this past weekend, and when telling a coworker about it yesterday, was asked how it compared to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, because he had heard Monsoon Wedding was better.

First off, just because a couple of movies are about large families in a culture foreign to the American viewing audience, that doesn't make them remotely comparable. My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which I haven't seen, is categorized as a comedy. Monsoon Wedding is anything but. It's darker, definitely a drama, and it deals with an arranged marriage, with seeds of family strife and choosing who to side with in a family in a culture that doesn't respect a woman's position as much as the American culture does.

The movie is in three languages - English and two other Indian languages - and is subtitled quite a bit (even on some English sections). They switch back and forth a lot, but after a bit it becomes easy to follow.

This is a great movie, really enjoyable. I highly recommend it.

Music

Two new CDs, which I just couldn't resist buying. Okay, so I was actively hunting for one and had heard a song from the other and impulse bought it. I'll start with the impulse buy.

Thankful by Kelly Clarkson

Yeah, I bought it. I heard Miss Independent right before getting out of the car at Target, and since it was $10.88, I decided that might be a good buy. Haven't listened to any of it yet, and I anticipate that I'll only like part of the songs. But hey, I swore I would buy it when she won American Idol and I did.

Now for the second CD and the object of my new girl crush.

To Whom It May Concern by Lisa Marie Presley

Regardless of the fact that she was married to the Weird One AND Nic Cage, I still think she's hot the way she looks now. Plus I've been actively salivating for this CD since I heard a bit of "Lights Out" a few weeks ago. So far it's been a really good listen, very rocker and dark, but not too dark. Her songs feel a lot more honest than if they were coming from a 17-year-old.

***

This entry definitely calls for the Rogue icon. Kick-ass chick kind of day.
