Due to the fact that I suck at working out at home (and don't have resistance machines to truly help me build muscle), I did a month membership at a gym. Today was my first day.

*dies*

People, at least I was smart enough to go to a gym I went to four or five years ago. I remembered how to use the machines. Which is great, considering if you don't get a year membership, you don't get a consultation with a trainer. I was smart and hopped on the treadmill for 20 minutes first. I need to work on the cardio first and foremost. Then I hit the machines. I've discovered a few things.

1. My left knee is still not completely better from kickball. Brace from here on out. (The shin, though, is the big problem. Top of the shin, even. That doesn't take pressure well.)

2. My legs are in way better shape than my arms. Not surprising, since I'm female.

3. My carpal also doesn't like certain exercises.

4. I'm still going to have to go to the high school football field on weekends for sprints.

5. I hate exercise. But I don't do it if I try to do it at home. If I go someplace else, I actually get things done (mostly so I can go back home and collapse on the couch). Now the key is figuring out what time of day is best for exercise - morning or afternoon. Tomorrow I'll try afternoon.

This is just me but I can't work out in the morning, especially if I don't have breakfast first. I feel light-headed and dizzy. I like working out immediately after work. I'm still out and about and it gives me a "second wind" to get through dinner and evening TV all the way through to bedtime.

Maybe try taking some classes, if your gym offers them? I find it's an easy way to get exercise if there is a specified time each week and for a specified duration.

It's weird, everyone keeps saying they get a second wind. I want to curl up on the couch and not move. LOL

I think this gym has some classes, which normally I'd be all over (because I do better at working out when it feels more like an activity), but my goals are very specific this time. I have to be able to do the POPAT, so I need to build up endurance and muscle strength. Especially my arms.

Now the key is figuring out what time of day is best for exercise...

Definitely in the morning. It's best to do it before you've got any food sitting in your stomach. Plus, if it's the first thing you do for the day, there's nothing else cluttering your mind. You shouldn't be stressed out or distracted yet and wanting to just flop down on the couch.

I must have started typing right before Sully commented. I'm not trying to confuse you, but I will say that physical training is one of the very few things the Army does a certain way for a legitimate reason.

*nods* I've done working out in the evening before, after work, when that was the only option I had. I think right now I'm doing either morning or early afternoon, just because those times have fewer people in the gym. And with morning, I can then come home and get other things done that require sitting on my butt. *g*

LOL I want to flop down on the couch no matter when I exercise. Hee. I'm not naturally athletic, sadly. But the way I dread going to the gym, while I'm off work, earlier in the day is better because I can get it over with.

I put a little something on my stomach, but an egg with some cheese and toast with jam was light enough that it gave me energy without being too much to make me sick. But yeah, I learned long ago about the food thing. Don't eat a big meal then exercise.

I recommend you use an elliptic bike, I never do exercise and have a bad back.. plus some other stuff and this one doesn't hurt at all!!! also it helps a lot and you burn tons of calories in 30 minutes :D. Hugs!! And I hope you feel better soon!!! oh and I do my exercise in the afternoon, right when I finish I shower and I feel clean to go to bed at any time I want :)

OMG, the elliptical machines are the one thing I can't do. LOL I swear, I keep trying, and I've seen little old ladies do them, but something just doesn't gel for me. It's kind of funny. I look like a drunk camel. Hee!

Really?? weird, 'cause I'm really awful in the treadmill myself... my backs kills me after a few minutes but the elliptical bikes... wow I love them :), maybe is the kind of bike... mine is pretty small :). Hugs!! Monica
