American Idol

Just a few things to say:

1. Yo, Wyclef. This is American Idol. There is no excuse or need for lip syncing, especially when you're actually good! So stop!

2. I apologize to America for that song, because Shakira is ten million times better than that. Really. She is. Just go out and buy "Donde Estan Los Ladrones" and listen to her stuff in Spanish. You can tell the remarkable difference in quality immediately. (Knowing Spanish or Arabic not required to enjoy the album.)

3. On the plus side, Shakira's hips never cease to amaze.

4. I was pleased with the bottom three...except I *am* kind of annoyed by Katharine being in it. She wasn't good. She wasn't. BUT she IS a far superior vocalist and didn't deserve that spot yet. I blame the fact that my mother voted for Kellie. I promise to vote for people with actual talent (as they now compare to one another) to counteract my mother in the future. (Note, I only got through for Elliott and Paris Tuesday night.)

5. A sign that I may be a bit insane with my Elliott love - as soon as they announced the bottom row was safe, I started yelling at the TV, because they can't have my Elliott. *cough* I even told them they could take Bucky, but don't touch Elliott.

6. A coworker and I have decided that the changing face of music (pop not being popular as it were) hinders the pop vocalists like Lisa and Katharine. The others fill a niche, whether it's R&B, country or rock. Ace has the same problem that Lisa and Katharine do - being pop when it's not cool to be pop. It's no longer acceptable in this competition to just be a good singer - you have to have a style. Says something about the changing face of the show and the diversity of what it brings to the audience. Is who stays in a direct reflection of talent, or a direct reflection of the viewers' musical tastes? And then the question begs, if Nikki McKibbin were on the show this year, would she be more widely accepted than when she was on the first time?

So I was thinking about American Idol's theme of Country for next week (while driving to Office Depot at lunch), and I realized something.

Someone will sing Dixie Chicks' "Sin Wagon". Someone will sing Martina McBride badly. Someone will sing the poppified version of a country song that was taken to mainstream radio. Someone will sing "How Do I Live".

Katharine will choose to sing Martina McBride's "Broken Wing" and smile throughout, making me hate her. (This same fate befell Diana Degarmo who sang the song while smiling - but only half the time - and couldn't hit some of the notes.) Oddly enough, we will have a repeat of season two, when Josh Gracin and Ruben sang the same song...Kellie will also go for a song that worked initially and sing "Broken Wing" as well, and by some shocking turn of events, will knock it out of the park for once (thereby dooming us all to having her on the show until the final three, at which time a horde of angry folk with pitchforks will storm the studios, skewer her, and all will be right in the world). Bucky will sing a servicable country song - most like Kenny Chesney or Garth Brooks, but extra points if he goes old school in any way and busts out George Strait, Hank Williams Jr., or Alan Jackson (not that Alan's old school as he's current, but his style is old school). Mandisa has sung backup for country singers for a good while, so expect her to choose a great country song that may or may not be oversung (I'm thinking Faith Hill or Martina McBride - a ballad). Ace will be confused about what to choose and go for a Keith Urban song, probably "Think of Me", as it had crossover success, and will cause the wrath of many Urban fangirls who will burn his likeness in effigy, which definitely seals his fate and means he'll be kicked off. Paris will be the one to sing "Sin Wagon", as it's bouncy, big, fun, and totally not age appropriate. Simon will again call her precocious and not like it. Taylor will go old school with "King of the Road" (or bust out the Lyle Lovett, as it's obscure enough yet a singer's style of music) and blast it out of the park. Elliott will be the wild card, as he's not a country fan but genuinely looking forward to the night, and will choose a song that no one expects him to sing and...well, who knows what he'll do. Let's just say that if he pillages Bucky's music collection it could get wild. Chris, naturally, will do either "Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" (Mark Chestnutt version, but rocked out, which basically means Aerosmith), or he'll earn points with me (but only slightly) for choosing a great song and go with Gary Allan's "Best I Ever Had" (but rock it out a la the originators, Vertical Horizon).

A sign of how my brain works (and that I really do like quotable stuff too much):

Getting to meet Harvick in October. Am now having a shirt made to give him. (Really, it's his fault as he's got that smirk going constantly.) The shirt? Will read "Mine is an evil smile". Wash, meet Harvick.

(Feel free to mock me. At least it's not a box of sex toys!)
