We Are The World

So, for the record, I still have my 45 of "We Are The World", the original. I had it matted and framed years ago. That was the first bit of music that I bought. So I'm a little rabid about this song.

Just watched the video for the new version. For the most part it was great. I have a few nitpicks, a few notes.

1. Favorite solo of the bunch was Pink's. Because her voice naturally has a gravelly quality that speaks to pain, which says a lot for this song. (Reminds me a bit of Springsteen's solo in the original in terms of pain in the voice.) Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Hudson just behind Pink on awesomeness of solo.

2. Why does Justin Bwhatever have a solo??????? Let alone the FIRST ONE?

3. Maybe it's just me, because I can't remember who all took part in the first one, but did Streisand get the exact same solo as she did the first time?

4. I understand why Wyclef Jean got such a significant role. And to a degree, I think his style is needed to give the song the Haitian edge to make it unique for this cause. At the same time, there were moments where I felt like he needed to tone down whatever he was doing, because he was screaming more than adding to the tone.

5. Celine Dion versus, whatever your thoughts on Celine, she schooled Fergie there.

6. Jennifer Nettles what the freaking hell? Girl can sing way better than that. Only thing I can think of is that the key just wasn't right for her voice.

7. The rap portion was needed as an update. What disappointed me is that you can tell that wrote it. What saved it was that LL Cool J obviously took over the rhythm of it. And that they all had to keep it simple to stay in sync. Because LL's style is way more appropriate than the Black Eyed Peas (who are very perky).

8. There is no reason on earth that T.Pain had a solo. I protest that one with much force.

9. How does Enrique Iglesias get invited to these things? Let alone a solo?

Because today calls for this.

You know, after watching the real video, I have more appreciation for the Psych commercial and the intricacies involved.

Music That Sucks

I don't get artists that give off tons of attitude, like to think they're original, can't sing, and in the end sound more like a parody.

The video/artist in question:

I'd like to point out that Ke$ha actually sounds like Kelly. Not Clarkson. The one below.

Okay, maybe a mash-up of Kelly and someone from Gossip Girl. (Kelly is way more awesome, though.)

Song Help

Looking for a song: Mrs. Berry by Hurricane Chris.

I've been told there's two versions, with the Mrs. Berry version being the rarer version. That's the one I need. (My sister got married and guess what her new last name is...)

I'm a gleeful girl. Just now watching RaceDay from this past Sunday, and all my dreams are coming true. Upon finding out that Jamie was driving the Bass Pro Shops car for sure, Ellyut invited him up to go hunting for four or five days. (No word if Jamie is going to give nursery decorating tips in exchange.) I swear, of the things I requested for Yuletide, two are already coming true!!!!

Orianthi - According to You

Basic new artist pop song. Nothing too remarkable about it, except for the part where you're bored and waiting for the hot girl to be more than just pretty and then BAM! Guitar solo! Because damn, she plays like Slash if Slash were hot and young and female. (Complete with totally not being able to see her eyes.) This chick shouldn't be bothering with singing. She just needs to form a super group.
VH1's Top 100 One Hit Wonders of the 80s

Below the cut are some of the most fantastic songs of the 80s. Totally awesome stuff from a totally awesome decade. Quite frankly, if I ever do karaoke again, I'm choosing what I'll sing from this list.

So we're going to meme this. Maybe make it into a "share the love, share the song" kind of thing. Who knows.

So I was listening to the radio. And "Stuck on You" was on and I was thinking about how Lionel Richie totally should have done a completely country album and the thought hit me (a really awesome thought, you'll be astounded at the awesome)...

"How awesome would it be to have Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers do a duet?"

Come on, that's totally awesome!

Anyway, of course that leads to me dashing to my computer to tell you all about that awesome idea, and then I realized I should totally check YouTube as well. Jackpot! (Also, a study in why plastic surgery and the eyes = bad idea.)

"Little Rock" by Colin Raye

Random country song from the mid 90s that just came on the radio. God I love that song. Had the cassette.

Part of me is excited because Whitney Houston!

Part of me is excited because Whitney just gave an award to Jennifer Hudson.

Part of me wants to cry because Whitney is higher than Paula Abdul on pain killers.

Someone mashed "Single Ladies" by Beyonce with The Andy Griffith Show theme.

It's actually strangely good. Or at least works on some bizarre level.

Completely Horrid Songs That Make You Wonder What The Heck The Writer Was Thinking

Yeah, totally going off track with [ profile] sullivanlane here on the theme we had going, just because I remembered hearing about this one and it dawned on me there'd be tons of you that would want to see the horror and be amazed.

The year: 1976

The thought process: probably something that we don't want to be privy to.

The result: Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman) by Joe Tex

More Really Bad Songs From Way Back When

I think I've got you beat with this one, [ profile] sullivanlane. It's an oldie but crappy. And to think, I loved this song back in the day. Now it makes me cry.

Music Pimping

Have meant to recommend this for awhile: "Free Bird" by Rory + Joey.

I can't stand "Free Bird". But their version is so nostalgic and sad, in that country way that for some reason that I like. Sort of an Alison Krauss kind of melancholy.

Now back to peeling potatoes.

More Really Bad Songs With Really Bad Videos

Okay, [ profile] sullivanlane struck a blow with Color Me Badd. So I have to counter with something special, something like..."Breakout" by Swing Out Sister. I may honestly be one of the few to remember this song. (It involves a piano recital.) What's so awesome is that it's a boring as hell song and the video looks like a commercial for hair care products.

Really Bad Songs With Really Bad Videos That You've Probably Forgotten

Inspired by [ profile] sullivanlane traumatizing us yesterday with some blond white kid that the industry desperately wanted to believe was black.
